Porto Cathedral sits on a granite hilltop. This elevated position turns the surrounding square into a natural observation deck. You can view the heavy stone walls and twin square bell towers before entering the church.

This large open square sits directly in front of the cathedral. A central stone pillory marks the middle of the plaza. Walk to the edge of the square for panoramic views of Vila Nova de Gaia and the Douro River. Bring sun protection, as the open space is bright and exposed.

Nasoni's Loggia

5 minutesBaroque architecture

Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni added this Baroque lateral porch to the north side of the building in 1736. It stands out against the original 12th-century structure. Notice the sharp contrast between the elegant Baroque details and the heavy, austere Romanesque walls.
